DAVID AND HILARY KER, ELEANOR, HENRY, ANDREW AND BENJAMIN

GCC has supported the Kers as missionaries since 1996. Hilary (Hobson) became a Christian in 1982 through the ministry of GCC. She states, “From the time I first became a Christian I was convinced that a call to follow Christ was a call to be a missionary.” For a brief time she worked at the GCC school before following a dream to study theology and missions at Oral Roberts University. Following graduation in 1992 she trained at the SIL linguistics school in Oregon in preparation for a graduate internship with SIL in Kenya. It was in Oregon that Hilary met David. Their destinies and interests brought them together as a couple and they were married in December 1992.

David’s work principally entails working with Mozambican church leaders to promote the use of Scriptures in the local languages. While Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique, only a small percentage of Mozambicans use Portuguese on a regular basis. Most use one of the more than forty Bantu languages spoken in the country. Since 1999, David’s number one task has been to develop and coordinate a translation of the Bible into Nyungwe, a language spoken by a quarter million people in Tete Province.

The Kers have four children: Eleanor, Henry, Andrew and Benjamin. The children study at home with their mother as well as attending a local Portuguese school. During frequent trips to their mission’s headquarters, the children study in an international school with other missionary children.
